Internal Organization

A number of different offices and departments are involved in the management of Convent of Christ complex, each with their own objectives and responsibilities.

The Technical and Scientific Support Office coordinates the historical, pedagogic, architectural and engineering areas of study with the aim of producing scientific content that supports the monument's activities.

The Visitor Support Office is the interlocutor of choice for members of the public seeking clarifications or more detailed information that is not available in the monument's information signage or other dissemination materials. This office is also responsible for passing on applications for renting spaces in the Monastery to IGESPAR.

The Educational and Didactic Department receives thousands of visitors each year and was specifically set up to attend to the needs of teachers and students of all education levels, in collaboration with the Technical and Scientific Support Office. In addition to dynamising school visits, this department also plans, produces and realises the contents of the tour guide documentation and pedagogic file sheets made available. It also carries out diverse actions aimed not only at attracting new audiences but also raising awareness for the importance of cultural heritage for our collective memory.

The Tourist Support Department, which works on a partnership basis is local and national tourism promotion entities such as the ERTLVT (Regional Tourist Body for Lisbon and the Tagus Valley), provides personalised information to visitors, who, once they have visited the monument, are introduced to other destinations and tourist attractions in the context of themed routes or itineraries, for example those associated with the Knights Templar and the Order of Christ.

The Conservation and Restoration Department at the Convent of Christ provides guidance for curricular internships from the Portuguese universities and colleges and monitors conservation and restoration work, taking a preventive conservation approach to its work.

The work of the Maintenance Department is carried out on a daily basis by specialists with in-depth knowledge of the monument using the most modern technologies and materials.

The Administrative Department is the body that manages and continually monitors the operation processes, namely revenue and expenditure and the performance of the diverse work groups. It also provides the Monastery management with the key indicators for guaranteeing compliance with service quality practices.

The Security Department, whose main responsibilities are to maintain the good visiting conditions of the monastery, as well as the security of the building and its contents, operating facilities and its works of art in storage, uses the latest technologies without affecting the correct reading of the whole space.
